BKL Recent Program Emails

Our most recent updates for BKL families in all programs.

Plan for Tuesday, 2/9/16: 1-day a week program

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:

Location:  Garipay Fields (9 Reservoir Road, Hanover)
Time: 3:30-4:30
Technique: Classic (K/1s can NOW bring poles)
Forecast:  High 20s

IT’S STILL NOT WHITE, BUT… we are hoping that our snow dances are going to pay off soon.

We are planning to have practice on Tuesday.

If we get snow… we’re going to need at least 2-3 inches to use our skis. Given the many variations of the forecast, we won’t know if this will happen until tomorrow morning. I am very hopeful that we’ll be on skis.

But, if we don’t get enough snow, we’re going to be running with poles and playing games.

I will send a message on Tuesday morning to confirm whether we will be using our skis or running.

OTHER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Want to volunteer to help out? If you have a few minutes to spare at the beginning or end of practice, please help us with grade-level sign-in/out or hot chocolate. Sign-up to volunteer here!
  • Ford Sayre Buffs: If your child is new to the nordic program and hasn’t yet received a buff, please stop by the K/1 table and get one (Fleece for K/1s; fabric for 2nd grade and higher)!
  • Community ski event: The Harland Tiki Torch Ski is scheduled for Saturday, February 13th! This is a wonderful family-friendly event with food, a bonfire, and trails lit with tiki torches. It’s free for kids under 12, too!  Check it out here.

Practice cancelled for 2/2/16 – 1-day a week program

Dear 1-day a week BKL families,

I am sorry to say that we have decided to cancel practice for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd.

Our late afternoon checks of Garipay Field leave us unconvinced that our full group of 145 kids and their coaches can ski at Garipay tomorrow, and the ground is so soggy that it even would be difficult to run around and play games in boots.

We encourage you to find a friend and try to find some snow. As of this afternoon, the Hanover golf course looks to have some snow patches big enough for a few skiers at a time. However, with a forecast for 40 degrees and sun, it is unclear what conditions anywhere will look like by Tuesday afternoon.

We are so sorry to have to cancel practice.

VERY THIN SNOW COVER…

We’re going to try to squeeze another day out of our remaining snow. Our coaches will work hard to find patches of snow that will allow us to practice nordic technique. If you have a kindergarten or first grade child, they are now welcome to bring their poles.

Note: I will send an e-mail tonight if we lose too much snow, and have to return to running around in boots/shoes.

A few upcoming events…

Hi folks,

I wanted to share a few upcoming activities that might be fun for you and your children.

Hanover High School Ski Jumping Competition on Friday, January 29

PAINTBALL BIATHLON: 1/31/16 at Mountain Top Resort in Chittenden, VT

If your child is looking to dip a toe into racing, the Mountain Top Paintball Biathlon is a great option – short ski loop which includes a stop to shoot paintballs at a target.  Note that preregistration closes tomorrow but you can also register the day of the race.  You can sign up on the SkiReg site.  Please let me know if your child is interested in doing the race. I will be there with my family, as will several of our Ford Sayre 1-day and 2-day a week coaches.

Upcoming Community Ski Event in Hartland, VT

The Hartland Tiki Torch Ski is coming up on Saturday, February 7th from 5-8PM! This is a wonderful family-friendly event with food, a bonfire, and trails lit with tiki torches. It’s free for kids under 12, too! Check it out here: TikiTorch2015Flyer

Please keep doing your “Snow Dances” – the small base that we have is melting very quickly!

Have a great weekend!

Technique: Classic (No poles for children in grades K-1)

CALL FOR HELP!

If you have a few minutes to spare at the beginning or end of practice, please help us with grade-level sign-in/out or hot chocolate. SIGN-UP TO VOLUNTEER HERE!

SNACKS:

At the end of practice, we will have snacks. It’s a fun time for kids and parents to socialize after practice. We will have a table set-up and provide drinks (hot chocolate, lemonade), Oreos, and Chips Ahoy.

We are asking families to please bring something to share (homemade or store-bought).  Anything snackable is welcome – cookies, chips, fruit. You may drop-off your contribution at 3:30pm, or bring it to the party at around 4:20 and join us for nibbles and socializing!

LOST:

One of our coaches lost her daughter’s 120 cm black and yellow Fisher waxless skis at the end of practice last week. She left them near the K/1 table. If they accidentally ended up at your home, please let me know and I can connect you to their owner (the skis are labeled B. Pekala).

FORD SAYRE BUFFS:

If your child is new to the nordic program and didn’t get a buff last week (Jan. 19), please stop by the K/1 table and get one (Fleece for K/1s; fabric for 2nd grade and higher)!

PAINTBALL BIATHLON: 1/31/16 at Mountain Top Resort in Chittenden, VT

Ford Sayre coaches (across the 1, 2, and 3-day a week BKL programs) support children in a variety of races throughout the winter. While we will tell you about upcoming races, you and your child can decide whether to participate. Racing can be exciting for many kids, but others may not be interested. With that said, the Mountain Top Paintball Biathlon race is a Ford Sayre favorite, is about an hour away, and many kids love the combination of skiing and shooting a paintball gun!  If you are interested, sign up on SkiReg and send me a note so I can make sure you get additional race information from our Ford Sayre crew.

Plan for Tuesday, 1/19/16 – 1-day a week program

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:

Location:  Garipay Fields (9 Reservoir Road, Hanover)
Time: 3:30-4:30
Technique: Classic (No poles for children in grades K-1)
Forecast:  Teens and WINDY. Please remember, we consider the 1-day program as an introduction to skiing. If you are concerned that your child will be too cold, we respect your decision and will look forward to seeing your child on a warmer day!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

If you have a few minutes to spare at the beginning or end of practice, please help us with hot chocolate or grade-level sign-in/out. SIGN-UP TO VOLUNTEER HERE!

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR TUESDAY 1/19:

Dress appropriately! Warm kids are happy kids. With the predicted cold and windy weather, PLEASE send your children dressed in non-cotton layers and make sure they have dry, warm, non-cotton socks (e.g. SmartWool). To add extra warmth, consider toe warmers in their boots and hand warmers in their mittens. You can even add lotion on their faces to prevent them from getting chapped cheeks. (Please note, while we hate to turn away children, all children must be dressed appropriately for spending at least an hour outside.)

Ford Sayre Buffs are back! We want each of our 1-day a week BKL participants to have a buff this winter! If your child is new to the program, please be sure they come home with a buff on Tuesday!  We’ll also have extras on hand for those children who were in the program last year, but may have misplaced their buffs.

Still no poles for Kindergarten and 1st grade skiers:  Thanks for your understanding; this really helps them learn to ski!

Please let a coach know if your child is having a problem with their equipment (e.g., boots that fall off; skis that don’t grip the snow; etc.). We do our best to catch and correct these problems early.

REMINDERS:

Bathrooms: Please make sure that your child has gone to the bathroom before practice starts. If needed, there is a Port-a-pot at the South end of the Garipay parking lot.

Sign-in: Please remember, all K/1 and 2nd grade students should be signed-in and out of practice by a parent. Children in 3rd or higher grades can sign themselves in, however our coaches still need a verbal or visual verification that their parent/guardian is present at sign-out.

Label your equipment! Please put your name on all of your ski equipment. (I will have some duct tape and permanent markers at the K/1 table if you need to borrow some.)

Lost and Found: We will have a small lost and found bucket by the K/1 check-in area. Please place any lost items in this bucket, and search the bucket if you are missing something.

ANY QUESTIONS ON PRACTICE OR EQUIPMENT??

Reach out to us! We’re here to field your questions and receive your comments. Let us know if we can help!  Aricca, BKL.One.Day@fordsayre.org, Cell: (603) 715-7233
