Practice CANCELLED for 1/12/16: 1-day a week Program

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I regret to say that I am cancelling tomorrow’s ski practice for the 1-day a week BKL program. The trails (skiing and running) are very icy and dangerous, and an ideal indoor activity space is unavailable for our program. Let’s hope for a snowy week ahead!

Best wishes,

Aricca; BKL.One.Day@FordSayre.org; cell: 603-715-7233

Please note: If you have a child enrolled in the 2-day a week BKL program, they will be meeting tomorrow at the Marion Cross School in Norwich, VT.

Stay tuned: Possible cancellation for Tuesday, 1/12/16

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:

Dear parents and caregivers,

We are looking ahead to Tuesday’s weather and want to warn you that we may not be able to have practice. The conditions are likely to be very icy, which will make it impossible to ski and may make it dangerous to run. We will make the final call by Monday night at 6pm.

Thank you for your understanding.

Awesome First Day on Snow, “Ski for Ks” Program, and Vermont Skier wins World Cup

Fun on Snow!

It is great to be on snow again ~ and so exciting to work with your children to build the fundamental skills of cross-country skiing. The magnitude of 140+ kids on skis is pretty impressive. Thank you to the great group of volunteers, children, family / caregivers, and others that support this program!

Ski for Ks: Encourage your child to track how far they ski this winter!

Encourage your children to keep track of how far they’ve skied this winter, and be eligible for a special patch or pin.  The Ski for Ks program is intended to help kids set and reach attainable goals. The purpose is to motivate them to ski more kilometers than they thought they could! It also encourages families to ski together outside of ski club practices and for kids to set ski dates with their friends.

Nordic Rocks is a collaboration between Central Cross Country Ski Association (CXC), New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA), Far West Nordic Ski Education Association (FWNSEA) and Rocky Mountain Nordic (RMN) to promote Nordic skiing between our four regions!

Download the 2015-16 Kids Training Log here, or link to Nordic Rocks to find more information and sign up for online tracking. Keep track of your distance… we’ll check back in at the end of the season to ask you for your total count of kilometers. Remember this should be fun, and is totally voluntary!

World Cup win for Vermont Skier, Sophie Caldwell!

Congratulations to Sophie Caldwell for her win in the World Cup Classic Sprint yesterday! Sophie is a Vermont native, Dartmouth alum, and the third American woman to win a World Cup race. Watch her exciting race here!

Practice Plan – 1/5/16 – 1-day a week program

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:

Location:  Garipay Fields (9 Reservoir Road, Hanover – Meet at East side of parking lot)
Time: 3:30-4:30
Technique: Classic (No poles for children in grades K-1)
Forecast:  Teens to low 20s, with some wind.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR TUESDAY 1/5:

Change in location! Now that we have snow, please pay special attention to the “Location” of practice, as it may change by the week. Garipay Field now has enough snow to ski – and we’ll take advantage of every inch we can. Please be patient with us as we become familiar with a new check-in routine. K/1s will meet closest to the entrance, followed by 2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, and 5th-8th grade.

No poles for Kindergarten – 1st grade! Younger children should leave their poles behind for our first on-snow practices. Why? Children tend to learn balance, coordination, and technique best when they aren’t hampered by their poles. We’ll let you know when they are ready for poles. (Note: Children in 2nd grade and higher should bring their poles.)

Label your equipment! Please put your name on all of your ski equipment. (I will have some duct tape and permanent markers at the K/1 table if you need to borrow some.)

VOLUNTEERS – WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Thank you to the enormous group of volunteers that are already making this program a success! As you know, our 1-day a week program is entirely volunteer run and staffed – and we would love to have your help!  I’ve consolidated our volunteer sign-up forms for help with hot chocolate and sign-in/out, and you can access them here! If you want to join us out on the snow, please send me an e-mail at BKL.One.Day@FordSayre.org

REMINDERS:

Bathrooms: Please make sure that your child has gone to the bathroom before practice starts. If needed, there is a Port-a-pot at the South end of the Garipay parking lot.

Clothing: Time for waterproof outer layers (on top and bottom), mittens, hats, ski boots – and a buff or scarf if it is really cold.  See our What to Wear When you Ski page for more information. (Please note, while we hate to turn away children, all children must be dressed appropriately for spending at least an hour outside.)

Sign-in: Please remember, all K/1 and 2nd grade students should be signed-in and out of practice by a parent. Children in 3rd or higher grades can sign themselves in, however our coaches still need a verbal or visual verification that their parent/guardian is present at sign-out.

Lost and Found: We will have a small lost and found bucket by the K/1 check-in area. Please place any lost items in this bucket, and search the bucket if you are missing something.

Practice starts promptly at 3:30! Our coaches plan to leave the check-in area by 3:30. While we will try to accommodate late children, we cannot guarantee that your child can participate in practice if they arrive after 3:30. Likewise, please be ready to pick up your child by 4:30! It makes many children uncomfortable to return from practice and not see their parents – and it prevents our volunteers from returning home to their own children.

Don’t forget your raincoat!!!

We’re still planning on a fun afternoon with hot chocolate and candy canes. If your child is joining us today, please remember to send them in a jacket with a waterproof outer layer (as well as mittens and a hat)!

As always, please remember that practice is always optional. You know your child best – and if you think they want to stay warm and dry, we’ll look forward to seeing them in January.

Happy holidays!

Plan for Tuesday, 12/22 – One-day a week program!

INFORMATION FOR THE 1 DAY BKL PROGRAM:

Location:  Ray School (Park in parent or bus drop-off circles or main parking lot, and walk to rear staff parking area)
Time: 3:30-4:30
Technique: Dryland (Please wear tennis shoes; no skis needed!)

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR TUESDAY 12/22:

Come celebrate the solstice with us! We’re planning a fun day in the woods, and are happy to have parents join us! We’ll be finishing off practice with candy-canes and hot chocolate. (Please send me a quick note if your child is NOT able to join us.)

REMINDERS:

Lost and Found: We will have a small lost and found bucket by the K/1 check-in area. Please place any lost items in this bucket, and search the bucket if you are missing something.

Parking: Please park in the main parking lot, bus drop-off, or parent drop-off circles and walk your child to and from the sign-in location. DO NOT drive into the rear staff parking lot closest to the start of practice as this area becomes very crowded with children at the beginning and end of practice and has no good turnaround spot.

Sign-in: Please remember, all K/1 and 2nd grade students should be signed-in and out of practice by a parent. Children in 3rd or higher grades can sign themselves in, however our coaches still need a verbal or visual verification that their parent/guardian is present at sign-out.  As a reminder, please make sure that your child is under adult supervision at the Ray School at all times before and after practice!

Bathrooms: Please make sure that your child has gone to the bathroom before practice starts. If needed, there are restrooms in the Ray School that can be used under adult supervision.

Clothing: Wear non-cotton layers, wool socks and running shoes (no winter boots), hat, and light gloves or mittens. See our What to Wear When you Ski page for more information. (If it is raining, please wear a waterproof outer layer on top.)
