It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our last session---what a great winter!! Despite the forecast for precipitation early in the day, we'll still be meeting in the afternoon to enjoy our last ski tour followed by our annual beach party on the snow. There will be games, music, food and fun.
I hope that your child can join us!

The trails at Garipay field are beautiful and it's likely that they'll be topped off with some fresh snow on tuesday---so hopefully the skiing will be great--but there's heavy snow forecasted for tomorrow afternoon/evening which could make the conditions unpredictable. Despite that, there's a core of volunteers who are ready to ski---so I won't cancel the session due to the weather---and we'll make the best of the situation if that occurs.
Hope to see you tomorrow!

The snow is beautiful at Garipay and the trails are nicely groomed so the skiing should be great tomorrow. In celebration of the upcoming holiday, there will be a Valentine's goodie bag for each group hidden along the trails which the skiers can search for during their ski tours.
Hope to see you tomorrow!

Showers and/or a wintery mix are predicted for tomorrow---so it looks like it could be a tough day for skiing. So for those who are interested in coming to ski-----please know that I"ll be there---and likely some other hardy volunteers. We'll try to make the best of a difficult weather situation and have some fun on the snow. For those who are interested in coming--please dress in waterproof clothes.

Hello from the Ford Sayre Nordic Rec program!
After a month of beautiful snow, it appears as though we're in for some changes with 40 degree temperatures predicted for the next few days. Likely there's enough snow pack to hold on through our first session with meets on Tuesday, January 8. Our unpredictable New England weather is consistently the most difficult feature of the season.
Here are a few details about the program.
The nordic rec sessions run on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 at Garipay field. We'll meet on the south side of the Garipay field parking lot-- which is located off of Reservoir Rd. in Hanover.
I've grouped the kids according to grade (K-Yellow; 1-Red; 2-Green; 3-Blue, 4-Orange; 5/6 Pink; 7/8-Black) so please bring your child to the designated colored flag. The grade groups are composed of skiers with mixed skiing experience and there will be anywhere from 2-5 instructors/group, enabling the class to accommodate the varying skill levels. The kids will learn how to ski on flat terrain, negotiate hills and perfect their technique. The goal is to have a positive introduction to a great lifelong sport.
There are three ski groups using Garipay field on Tuesday afternoons (Ford Sayre Rec, Ford Sayre Development, and Hanover High Nordic). With these numbers, the parking in the Garipay lot is extremely limited, so as a result, drop off and pick up can be problematic. Please bring your child to his/her designated group as the parking lot is quite hectic and I don't feel comfortable with the kids walking around the lot without a parent. Also--please check in with the group volunteer at the end of the session so that we know that your child has been picked up.
No wax skis work well due to the varying conditions. Skate skis are also a possibility for those with experience. Please make sure that your child is in warm, dry clothes--preferably layers with windblock. Hats are essential. A hearty snack before skiing is also essential.
If the temperature is too low (less than 10 degrees) or if the conditions are poor (ice, freezing rain) then class may be cancelled for the afternoon. This decision will be made by Monday early evening. Please check your e-mail for a notice of class cancellation or this web site.
Please feel free to contact me as questions arise.
Thanks!
