Class Assignments
Your child’s instructor will contact you by telephone between January 6th and 8th with specific information about the class number. Each level is color coded, and all instructors and Area Captains wear bibs that match in color. The meeting places are identified by signs indicating each level and number designation.
Corresponding levels, colors, and meeting sites are as follows:
| Level | Meeting Location | Color |
|---|---|---|
| A | To the left of the Holt's chair* (across from the lodge) |
Light Blue |
| B | By the J-bar (straight ahead as you drive in the parking lot) |
Orange |
| C | At the bottom of the Winslow lift (same side as the lodge) |
Yellow |
| D | Outside Lodge (front patio) |
Green |
| E | Outside Lodge (front patio) |
White |
| Telemark | Outside Lodge (front patio) |
Burgundy |
| Kindergarten | On the J-bar hill (bottom, on the right near the "Hi Kids" snowman sign) |
* Note: A Level classes meet for the first two lessons to left of the Holt's chair and the remaining six lessons at the base of the J-Bar.
We suggest that you write your child’s class assignment on a piece of paper and place it in his or her jacket pocket so that he or she can refer to it.
The Skiway is again issuing Ford Sayre program passes in the form of helmet stickers. Each child will be required to wear this pass during the Wednesday classes. Instructors will distribute these passes on the first day of class.
Please have your child at his or her meeting place, skis on and ready to go by 2:55 pm. Classes will depart their respective base locations at 3:00 pm sharp. Any late arrivals must wait at the base with the assigned level Area Captain to join their class. Area Captains may be identified by the color and "question mark" design on their bibs. Early arrivals MAY NOT take a "quick run" before class. Our insurance coverage does not allow for unsupervised skiers.
Please meet your child promptly at dismissal time at his or her base location, as the Skiway closes immediately after our classes are dismissed.
Placement
We assess level assignments (A – E) on skills and not the terrain (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced slopes) or speed a skier can handle. Any questions regarding placement may be addressed with your child’s instructor. Note: Kindergartners are placed and taught by the professional Dartmouth Skiway instructors.
Discipline
Each instructor will review the ground rules with his or her class. Rules are few and simple, necessary to ensure time is well spent, and aimed at preventing disruptive and dangerous behavior. If a skier disregards a warning, he or she will be left with an Area Captain at the base to wait out the next run. If the negative behavior persists, a Director will talk with the parents and may request that the child be removed from the program.
Clothing
Helmets are mandatory. Please dress your child very warmly. A cold child cannot enjoy skiing and may suffer frostbite. Children should wear DRY socks, DRY warm waterproof gloves or mittens (not wool ones), neck warmers, ski parkas and ski pants. We also encourage a spare pair of hand-warmer/mini-heater packs for your child’s pocket, just in case.
Gear
Make sure that your child’s equipment (skis, boots and helmet) fits comfortably, and has been adjusted by a certified ski shop. Have the child try on and remove the equipment several times to become familiar with it. Label your child’s skis, poles, and boots to avoid mix-ups. Please note that we are not permitted to make any adjustments to equipment. The Dartmouth Skiway offers equipment rental packages for our weekly lessons or for the entire season.
Parking
Parking is limited. Please follow the directions of the parking attendants.
We cannot allow parents to drive up to the lodge for drop-off, unloading or pick-up.
Cancellation
Ford Sayre rarely cancels class. The Skiway does a terrific job of snowmaking and provides fine skiing conditions. If necessary, we will try to make the decision to cancel class by 8:00 PM the night before. If we cancel, we will send an email and our instructors will make every effort to contact each of their students. We will also record a message on the Ford Sayre hotline: 643-2226 and post it on this web site.
If you know your child will not attend a class, please notify your child’s instructor.
